The haddock resembles a small cod. It measures between 35 - 65 centimetres and weighs between 1 - 2½ kilograms. It has a slightly prominent upper jaw and a small mouth; a very short barbel hangs from its lower jaw. Its back and sides are purplish grey; each of its sides is adorned with a black lateral line, and there is a large black spot between this line and the pectoral fin. The haddock is found on both sides of the North Atlantic; in France, the English word "haddock" refers specifically to smoked haddock. Milder than cod, the white flesh of the haddock is lean and flavourful.
